ADLEY: THE RUPERT INDEX.This 1952 first edition,was re-issued in facsimile in 2002 by Pedigree Books Ltd.There was also a 1943 annual with the same name/title and shouldn't be confused with this edn/copy.] VG-.Owner inscrptn/name,but no price-clip (5/-).Lightly aged,minimally grubbed, colour,wrap-around pictorial artwork by Alfred BESTALL,illustrated,matt paper-covered card boards; with some negligible shelf-wear to edges.Corners inevitably,but minimally bumped with some reciprocal rubbing to same.About 1/2" top of spine/ backstrip missing and approximately 1" of the foot of spine/backstrip missing too,the rear board's spine/backstrip edge is split along it's entire length but the other edge is still attached and in situ, by upper board's edge.Top edge slightly aged and dust-soiled,fore-edge less affected and therefore much brighter and cleaner; contents bright,tight and generally clean,with some dog-ear creases to some pages top corners' due to top upper corner of front and upper board being bumped.Described hard but fairly and honestly.UK,slim Qrto HB,no dw/dj,as issued,1st edn,6-118pp [paginated] includes colour strip stories,puzzle and 3pp origami instructions to make an elephant,plus [unpaginated] puzzle frntis, title page and contents list/table. Cover: Rupert up a tree standing on a branch,holding on with his left hand and waving to reader with his right hand.Beppo is sitting on a branch to Rupert's right. First story: Rupert and the Mare's Nest (1949) - plus 5 others,Rupert and the Sea- Sprites,Rupert and the Elephants (both of these stories are BESTALL originals), Rupert and the Arrows (1949),Rupert,Beppo and the Caravan (1949),and Rupert and the Snuff-Box (1949). Alfred Edmeades Bestall (1892-1986),born Mandalay,Burma,the son of a Methodist minister.Studies art on a scholarship at the Birmingham School of Arts and Crafts, and afterwards at the Central School of Arts and Crafts,London.After serving in Flanders during WW1 (1915-19),he worked in Fleet Street,contributing humorous illustrations to 'Punch','The Tatler','The Bystander','Passing Show' and various lesser magazines. In 1936 he took over the Daily Express series of Rupert Bear strips (created by Mary Tourtel and first appeared in the paper on 8th November,1920.) from her and by the time he retired from morning paper work in 1965,he had produced over 270 Rupert adventures.He continued to draw for the 'Rupert' annuals until 1973. Since April 2013,again in March 2015,and in this year too,the UK Post Office has altered it's Pricing in Proportion template,altering its weight allowances, dimensions and lowered its qualifying compensation rates too!
